Iranian Leader Calls President Trump “Mentally Retarded”

In the latest embarrassing episode to hit the Trump administration, this week Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei launched one of his most scathing critiques to date following the U.S. president’s decision to decertify Iran’s compliance with the 2015 nuclear deal.

In Khamenei’s first reaction since Trump’s decision, he said on Wednesday that Iran “will not tear up the nuclear deal so long as the other side has not torn it up, but if they do, we will cut it in pieces.” This statement, along with Iran’s conduct, demonstrates that Iran has no interest in walking away from the deal or failing to abide by its terms.

Talking to a gathering of students in Tehran, Khamenei also provided speculation as to why he believed Iran was in America’s crosshairs.

“They are angry because the Islamic Republic has foiled their plots in Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and Egypt,” he said. Khamenei also seemed to suggest that the U.S. was frustrated with Iran’s successes against ISIS.

Clearly not impressed with Trump’s anti-Iranian rhetoric, Khamenei didn’t hold back in his assessment of the United States.

“I don’t want to waste our time to respond to the rants and whoppers of the foul-throated president of the United States,” Khamenei also stated, before referring to President Trump as “mentally retarded.”

Ironically enough, Khamenei’s position on the issue of the Iranian nuclear accord is more or less in line with almost every other major player in the world.

Khamenei didn’t limit his criticism to Trump, and also launched a staunch attack on American foreign policy in general, which Iran greatly distrusts given America’s history of interfering inside Iran.

“The US is the agent of the international Zionism, it was the US that created Daesh [Arabic acronym for ISIS] and Takfiri movements [Iranian media’s terminology for Sunni extremist groups],” Khamenei argued.
