It’s another nauseating day for the United States legal system. One could call it a tragic miscarriage of justice, but even that would be an understatement; we must now accept without any reasonable stipulations an almost unbelievable reality: in America, cops can kill with impunity. Racist police departments around the country areprotected by a legal system equally rife with corruption, cronyism and ineptitude.

The latest demonstration of this reality? A grand jury has decided not to indict the Cleveland police officers who killed 12-year-old Tamir Rice.

If you’re somehow unfamiliar with the case, here’s a brief recap: on November 22, 2014, police were dispatched to a snowy park, where a man had reported seeing someone wielding a gun. The officers, Timothy Loehmann and Frank Garmbac, arrived less than 10 minutes later, pulled up right in front of teenager Tamir Rice, emerged from the police car, and immediately fired.

Surveillance footage confirms that as the teen was dying, the cops offered no first aid and did not even check on the body. If they had, they might have discovered that Tamir Rice had been packing a toy gun. He died the following day in the hospital.

Over the course of the next year, with excoriating public opinion on their backs, authorities launched three investigations into the case: the first by Cleveland police, the second by the Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Office, and the third — and most recent — by Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Timothy McGinty.

On Monday, McGinty said the officers’ conduct represented “a perfect storm” of errors, but “did not constitute criminal conduct.”
