This Week’s Assault On Liberty: April 11, 2016

Some quick notes, questions, and random thoughts about the news from the past week.

The stupidity and silliness regarding North Carolina’s religion-based bigotry law continued this week. Governor Pat McCrory and Republican Neanderthals in the legislature dug in their heels claiming that the law will not affect the economy of the state. Paypal, Lionsgate, and an unidentified company that was considering expanding in Asheville have all decided to go elsewhere taking over 1,000 jobs with them. The NBA is threatening to pull the All-Star game out of Charlotte and the NCAA says there won’t be any tournament games played in the state. And at least 13 conventions have been cancelled. All of these organizations cited the law, HB2, as the reason for leaving, evidence of economic damage McCrory chooses to ignore. Bigotry is not cheap.

But it’s not just Bible-thumpers being ridiculous, Bruce Springsteen decided to show that liberals can be just as dumb. The Boss (of lame music) abruptly cancelled his concert in Greensboro claiming that “some things are more important than a rock show.” While I’m sure this made Bruce feel good that he is making a statement against bigotry, it also makes him a jerk. Thousands of fans not only bought tickets but made travel arrangements to see their musical idol and virtually none of these fans had anything to do with the new law. But Bruce decided to give them a big FU to make a point that won’t change anything. Do any of the morons in the legislature give a damn what Bruce thinks? Of course they don’t. Springsteen’s pointless gesture screws no one other than his fans. But as we all know, if your intentions are good then who cares what the consequences are, right?

If you are a single parent with two children, how much money do you need to make annually in order to afford the basic necessities of life? $20,000? $25,000? $30,000? According to the nonprofit research group MDC, the correct figure is $53,727. If you live in San Francisco or New York City you’re probably thinking that’s not enough, but if you’re in the rest of the country you’re probably saying “whaaaat?”

In its State of the South report, MDC says that is the amount of money you need to pay for shelter, food, and clothing for you and your two rugrats in North Carolina. This is $7,000 more than the average household income for the state. Thus this progressive think-tank is of the opinion that the majority of North Carolinians are not only poor, but on the verge of economic disaster. MDC works with governments throughout the South on anti-poverty programs. With such a warped view of what constitutes “poverty” is it any wonder the progressives keep demanding more money from taxpayers to help the “underprivileged.”

Leaving the Tarheel State, Chelsea Clinton is on the campaign trail for her mom. Here’s what she had to say about how Hillary would enhance Obamacare:

We can either do that directly or through tax credits. And, kind of figuring out whether she could do that through executive action. She thinks either of those will help solve the challenge of … the crushing costs that still exist for too many people, who even are part of the Affordable Care Act and buying insurance.

Did you catch that? The Cintons admitted that the cost of Obamacare is “crushing” for too many people. Oops, the truth slipped out!

BTW, when Hellary wins the election don’t expect her to do anything that will actually make Obamacare cheaper, more efficient, or more useful. In fact, expect the opposite.

Half a million dollars – that’s what US taxpayers have forked over to the University of Michigan for a three year study. What is the subject of the study that is so important that you were forced to hand over your hard earned cash? A cure for cancer? An end to world hunger? Limitless energy?

No. The U of M will be studying microagression by male engineering students. From the grant proposal:

The research will test whether exposure to microaggressions increases perceived stereotype threat and diminishes a sense of belonging in engineering for women compared to men.

In other words, the premise of the research is that male students subtly harass women so that they will chose a profession other than engineering and the university is determined to figure out how these evil men are doing it!

Aren’t you glad you pay taxes?

As the year progresses I will keep a running tally of the number of unarmed citizens and dogs killed by police. I will also keep tabs on the number of cops killed in the line of duty.

Here’s the count for the first 14 weeks of the year along with links to the most recent killings:

Unarmed Americans killed by police: 14

Dogs killed by police: 16

Dog Shot, Killed by Kyle Police at HEB

Montrose Dog Shot, Killed by Police; Chief stands Behind Officer

Police intentionally killed in the line of duty: 15
